Finding Every Shutoff Valve in Your Home

In most Florida homes built in the last 40 years, you will find it near the water heater, under a sink in the kitchen or bathroom, or in a utility closet. It is usually a gate valve, which looks like a round wheel, or a ball valve, which has a lever handle. Turn a gate valve clockwise to close it. For a ball valve, turn the lever a quarter turn so it sits perpendicular to the pipe.

The curb shutoff. This is the valve at the street inside the meter box. In Pinellas County, those meter boxes are typically located near the sidewalk at the edge of your property. You will need a meter key, sometimes called a curb key, to operate it. They cost about $10 to $20 at any hardware store. Keep one accessible. The curb shutoff is your backup if the interior valve fails or if you cannot locate it.

Individual fixture shutoffs. These valves let you isolate one problem without cutting water to the whole house. Here is where to find them:

• Toilet: Look for a small oval or football-shaped valve on the wall behind the base of the toilet.
• Kitchen and bathroom sinks: Check under the sink cabinet. There are usually two valves, one for hot and one for cold.
• Washing machine: Look for two hose bibs on the wall directly behind the machine. Turn them clockwise to close.
• Water heater: There is a cold water supply valve on the top or side of the unit. Closing this cuts water to the heater only.

What to Do Right After You Shut Off the Water

Once the water is off, open the lowest faucet in the house to drain any water still sitting in the lines. This reduces pressure and limits additional leaking from damaged sections. If you shut off at the water heater, do not run the heater until water supply is restored. Running a water heater dry can damage the heating element.
